Colonel Henrik N. Smith, CD

Colonel Smith was born in Bermuda and grew up in Burlington Ontario.  He joined the Canadian Forces in 1983 under the Regular Officer Training Plan (ROTP) and, after completing a university degree, trained as an Air Weapons Controller, graduating in 1987.

His postings have included 51 Squadron, Canadian North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) Region, and Fighter Group Headquarters at 22 Wing, North Bay, Ontario; Air Combat Command (ACC) Headquarters at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia; Royal Canadian Artillery School and 3 Wing Detachment, as the Commander, at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, New Brunswick; two postings to Canadian Detachment Tinker at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma, once as the Commander;  Directorate of Military Careers at National Defense Headquarters, Ottawa; Royal Canadian Air Force Headquarters in Ottawa; and NORAD Headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and to 22 Wing North Bay as the Wing and CADS Commander.

He has conducted six operational deployments: two to OPERATION (OP) SOUTHERN WATCH for operations in Iraq; OP ENDURING FREEDOM for operations in Afghanistan; OP IRAQI FREEDOM for operations in Iraq; OP CARRIBE for counter drug operations in south and Central America, and OP MOBILE for operations in Libya.

He has a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Political Science from Carleton University, Ottawa, a Master’s Degree in International Relations from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, and a Master’s Degree in Defense Studies from the Royal Military Collage of Canada.  He is a graduate of the Canadian Forces Joint Command and Staff Program and the United States Air Force Air War College.

Colonel Smith has flown more than 2,000 hours in the E3 AWACS on NORAD, Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and Central America missions, including 96 combat and combat support missions. He has been awarded the South West Asia Service Medal (Afghanistan), the General Service Medal (Iraq) , the Operational Service Medal (South America), the Canadian Peacekeeping Medal (Southern Watch),  the NATO Medal (Libya), the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal, Canadian Decoration with bar, the United States Meritorious Service Medal, four United States Air Medals, and the Deputy Commander NORAD Commendation.

On 8 April 2015, Colonel Smith assumed command of 22 Wing/Canadian Forces Base (CFB) North Bay and the Canadian Air Defence Sector.
