Colonel Patrick Thauberger, C.D.
Colonel Patrick Thauberger enrolled in the Canadian Forces as an Air Navigator in 1987 in Vancouver, BC.
After earning his Wings, Colonel Thauberger completed several postings within 14 Wing Greenwood at 405, 404, and 415 Squadrons throughout which he progressed through most leadership positions. Highlights of his operational career include being Lead Navigator conducting armed patrols over the Adriatic during OP SHARP GUARD, commanding a crew during Operation (OP) APOLLO in the Persian Gulf region, and an extended period as acting Commanding Officer of 415 Squadron. In 2011 Colonel Thauberger was appointed as Commanding Officer (CO) of 404 Squadron, leading the Long Range Patrol (LRP) Force through the initial training of the CP-140M and the advancement of the LRP ‘TRAINEX’ concept, as well as rejuvenating focus on leadership development of junior officers.
Colonel Thauberger has extensive Strategic and Operational level staff experience: in Air Strategic Plans, he was the Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance & Control (ISR&C) expert developing the Air Force Campaign Plan, notably pursuing the CMA and JUSTAS projects. He also led the Options Analysis to revamp the entire RCAF Pilot training system as the Future Pilot Training Programme Director (despite being an ACSO!). As Chief Western Hemisphere Operations in the Strategic Joint Staff, he provided strategic decision support for OP PODIUM (Canadian Forces (CF) support to the Vancouver Olympics) and humanitarian assistance following the Haiti earthquake under OP HESTIA, and he also deployed to OP ATHENA as both the CO of the Canadian Element for COMKAF, and the Chief J5 coordinating development of Kandahar Airfield. Colonel Thauberger also served as Officer in Charge of the Air Component Coordination Element (Atlantic) in Halifax, operationalizing the Air Task Force concept for domestic and embarked helicopter operations.
Colonel Thauberger has a baccalaureate degree in Psychology and Political Studies from the University of Manitoba, and a Master of Defence Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada. He has been very active with the Special Olympics programs in Ontario and Nova Scotia, and in his spare time enjoys cycling and playing the guitar.
